Geosynthetics: policy cornerstones

TenCate Geosynthetics in its own specific way implements the four cornerstones of the TenCate business model. In brief: collaboration with partners is taking place more often in the development and marketing of system and other solutions. Sales and marketing are being organized more efficiently and there is concentration of specific market segments. The product portfolio is being rationalized and production efficiency increased. 

End-user marketing
TenCate Geosynthetics has four market segments: Separation & Filtration, Reinforcement & Paving, Water & Environment and Agriculture & Industrial. Its customers and end-users worldwide include public sector bodies, engineers, project managers, construction companies and distributors. The group is at home in many different markets. TenCate Geosynthetics intends to increase its presence in these markets by developing and offering new system solutions and products with high added value. By contrast, TenCate concentrates on the four specific market segments and solutions mentioned above. By gaining a better understanding of the customer, it is possible gear product design and service optimally to the customer and end-user. The focus will be placed more on growth markets such as Asia and South America and on applications in the infrastructure and environmental markets.

TenCate Geosynthetics focuses on ‘intelligent’ geosynthetics, polymer technology and the provision of solutions to geotechnical problems. The R&D activities within the group are decentralized and coordinated on a global basis. It also seeks association with partners. This may relate to the supply of biopolymers for the dewatering of sludge (water management) and fibreglass sensors.

Product differentiation
TenCate Geosynthetic offers its customers a differentiated range of geotextiles, non-wovens and geogrids. The Separation & Filtration segment is dominated by non-wovens and is characterized by large volumes and a wide standard range of products. Reinforcement & Pavement has differentiated products with higher added value. The Water & Environment market segment mainly relates to TenCate Geotube® systems). The Agriculture & Industrial segment uses many industrial fabrics.

Cost leadership
With production operations in Europe, the United States and Asia, TenCate consistently operates close to the market. Its three European production locations – in Linz (Austria), Bezons (France) and Almelo (the Netherlands) – enable TenCate Geosynthetics Europe to respond rapidly to demand and to any special requirements. This also produces logistical and price advantages. The geotextiles, geogrids and geosystems include a number with a highly distinctive capacity, but as yet there is insufficient volume potential. The sales organization has therefore been arranged more efficiently and is now coordinated on a global basis. The product portfolio is being rationalized and investments are being made in further increasing efficiency in production.
