TenCate GeoDetect® in Utrecht
Climate change, limited inspection and cutbacks demand smart innovative solutions for the monitoring of dikes. TenCate GeoDetect® is a system based on optical sensors for monitoring deformations in embankments, dikes and railway track beds. This ‘intelligent geotextile’ delivers an economically responsible solution that guarantees the safety of such critical soil structures − as the results of pilot projects demonstrate.
TenCate GeoDetect® is a system based on geotextile with embedded optical sensors for monitoring deformations in embankments, dikes and railway track beds. TenCate GeoDetect® is already being applied on a commercial basis in infrastructure projects in the USA, France, Austria, Germany and Italy and in an environmental project in Peru. Interest in sensor systems such as TenCate GeoDetect® is growing in the field of civil engineering, and working with sensors in the construction of bridges, tunnels, dams and buildings is already routine.
A monitoring project with TenCate GeoDetect® is currently in progress in Utrecht. The Livedijk project encompasses the Grechtdijk in Woerden (picture) and the Voorhavendijk of the Beatrix Locks in Nieuwegein. In this project experience is being gained in using sensors for the real-time monitoring of dikes. Through these sensors it is expected to learn more about the dike stability. Among the project partners are TNO, AGT Nederland, the district water control board De Stichtse Rijnlanden and the Department of Waterways and Public Works. The parties involved with the Utrecht Livedijk want to investigate whether this technology can be applied to existing dikes.
TenCate Geosynthetics has already been cooperating with TNO and AGT International on a monitoring project along the Yellow River in Zhengzhou (China) since October 2011.
