Armour for General Dynamics
In April 2014 TenCate Advanced Armour received two orders for vehicle armour from General Dynamics. General Dynamics European Land Systems selected TenCate Advanced Armour EMEA as supplier of lightweight modular armour systems for the Eagle V 4x4. The facility in Newark (Ohio, United States) was selected by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems to supply the armour solution for the Ground Mobility Vehicle, the GMV 1.1. Both orders highlight the position of TenCate as supplier of armour solutions for military vehicle programmes.
Vehicle armour is traditionally the main market for TenCate Advanced Armour. The market group offers weight-efficient, passive armour for vehicles and active underbody protection against roadside bombs for tactical and combat vehicles. The armour systems can significantly increase the survivability of the people inside the vehicles. These are customized solutions.
For General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) TenCate supplies modular armour systems for the Eagle V 4x4. This vehicle is characterized by great manoeuvrability, tactical mobility and – thanks to its modular armour system – an outstanding level of protection. The vehicles were purchased from GDELS by the Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr, the German purchasing company. This relates to 176 vehicles of this type for the German Bundeswehr (Federal Defence Forces). The armour kits are manufactured by TenCate Advanced Armour in Vissenbjerg (Denmark).
General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GDOTS) is the prime contractor for the US Army Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV). SOCOM plans to purchase 1,300 GMVs over the next six years to replace its current fleet of High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles. The TenCate solution for the GMV 1.1 consists of primary vehicle armour, including transparent armour. The armour is ready for installation. Ceradyne had partnered GDOTS and Flyer to develop the armour system for this vehicle. The Flyer is a fast, lightweight and extremely manoeuvrable vehicle that can rapidly be configured for a variety of mission needs. It can be transported by aircraft and helicopters, such as the V-22 Osprey from Boeing, the Sikorsky CH-53 and the C-5 Galaxy and C-130 Hercules from Lockheed. The Flyer is ideal for operations in severe, rugged and restrictive terrains.

GDELS and GDOTS are part of Combat Systems, one of the four core activities of General Dynamics. The Combat Systems group designs and builds military tracked and other armoured vehicles. The cooperation between TenCate Advanced Armour and GDELS resulted from the contract for Piranha III vehicles for the Danish Army at the end of the 1990s. As a result of this contract a number of Danish companies received offset (compensation orders) for subcontracting deliveries or supplying Mowag. A key objective of Danish legislation relating to offset was to promote and stimulate the development of sustainable, long-term business relationships between Danish companies and foreign companies. TenCate (then Roulunds) performed well as a supplier and has maintained a mutually beneficial business relationship. TenCate has delivered high quality solutions at a competitive price throughout the cooperation.
The cooperation with GDELS has resulted in the development and supply of armour solutions for a number of vehicle projects, including the Eagle, Piranha and Duro. These types are being used by various defence forces. The materials meet the specifications in terms of technology and performance and are competitive as regards pricing. For a long-term partner this last factor is important. Furthermore, TenCate has been able to support the company in fulfilling their offset obligations in Denmark.
Thanks to the cooperation with GDELS, TenCate has been able to develop further at both a technological and organizational level. Quality, design, reliability, technology, flexibility and a competitive price comprise the value proposition of TenCate Advanced Armour for GDELS.
TenCate previously provided General Dynamics with armour kits for the Foxhound LPPV (light protected patrol vehicle). The orders underline the position of TenCate as a supplier for large-scale military vehicle programmes from exacting major vehicle producers.
