Synthetic turf pitch at Stellenbosch
On Tuesday 8 July Lilianne Ploumen, Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, opened a sustainable mini synthetic turf field at the Lentlus sports complex of the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa).
The installation of the synthetic turf field was achieved through the cooperation of football club PEC Zwolle, KNVB WorldCoaches, Philips and GreenFields. Thanks to floodlights around the field, which are powered by solar energy, the field can also be frequently used in the evening hours.
GreenFields is strategic partner of the Football for Hope programme. The company donated the base course for the new football field. ‘Football plays an integral role in building up diplomatic relations, just as it empowers girls and women,’ said the minister (on the picture right). ‘Football brings people together, as South Africa showed during the 2010 World Cup.’
The Dutch minister also met Jos Dirkx, the woman who set up the foundation Girls & Football SA.
