Protecting Piastowski Canal banks

Deepening the fairway between the Baltic Sea and the Polish port of Szczecin means the banks of the Piastowski Canal require better protection. Application of TenCate Polyfelt® F60 is a sustainable and cost-effective solution.
The 12-km-long Piastowski Canal connects the Oder Lagoon and Szczecin, Poland’s largest port, via the port of Świnoujście to the Baltic Sea. Ocean-going ships can reach one of the largest port agglomerations in this region by using this waterway. In a certain sense the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście, close to the border with Germany, are complementary. Szczecin (68 km from the coast) offers the most cost-effective way of reaching the inland by sea − and therefore the recipients and despatchers of goods. Situated directly on the coast, Świnoujście offers efficient ferry routes and access for larger vessels with a draught of up to 13.2 metres.

The Piastowski Canal (starting at the right, picture by Ralf Roletschek) has served as a valuable connecting waterway for 130 years. To further improve the navigation conditions, a number of modernization projects have been launched. Of key importance for the further development of both ports is the deepening of the Świnoujście- Szczecin fairway and subsequent strengthening of the canal banks.

When a large vessel passes through the canal, it generates waves over half a metre high and equally deep, which leads to serious damage of the canal banks if they are not adequately protected. For reinforcement purposes TenCate is supplying a total of 700,000 m2 of non-woven geotextile: 500,000 m2 of TenCate Polyfelt® F60 in the first half of this year, followed by the remaining 200,000 m2 later this year.

TenCate Polyfelt® F60, a two-layer geotextile, is designed for hydraulic applications. One layer acts as a filter, while the other serves as protection against mechanical damage to this filter. In this project it will serve to reinforce and protect the canal banks from erosion. It is fixed on the banks (from 4 metres above water level to a depth of 15 metres below) by divers, and then stones are placed on the geotextile for added protection.

Application of TenCate Polyfelt® F60 protects the infrastructure and neighbouring buildings and nature from the impact of the waves generated by passing ships. It is a technically simple and cost-efficient solution for projects of this kind.
