TenCate Millenia™, an integrated multilayer system from TenCate Protective Fabrics for personal protection, is being used in the approximately 1,100 new units of turnout gear for the firefighters of Brabant-Zuidoost safety region in the Netherlands.
The aspects of wearer comfort, durability, safety, and lastly, price formed the starting point in the tendering process.
Fire brigades that are using TenCate Millenia™ are very positive about the quality of the material
In order to reach a single protective solution for all the fire brigades in the Brabant-Zuidoost safety region (VRBZO), careful attention was paid during the tendering process to functionalities such as ergonomics, comfort, personal protection and durability. Following wearer trials, the uniform from Sioen, based on TenCate Millenia™, was judged to be the best and the fabrics were recently supplied.
VRBZO has joined the ranks of national and international fire brigades that have opted for the protective materials and fabric systems from TenCate Protective Fabrics. In the Netherlands these include the fire brigades in the safety regions of Amsterdam-Amstelland, Twente (picture), IJsselland, Noord-Oost Gelderland and Zaanstreek-Waterland.
The order was placed by Sioen Apparel, a division of Sioen Industries NV. Sioen Apparel produces a wide range of high-grade protective clothing for just about any working conditions. In the words of Bart Vervaecke, CEO of Sioen Apparel: ‘Sioen keeps you warm; Sioen keeps you dry; Sioen protects you’.
Safety, prevention and protection at work are one of the most important themes nowadays, adds Anthony Doornkamp (sales manager, Sioen Netherlands), ‘because they contribute to the general wellbeing of employees. Everyone knows that an employee who feels well, protected and comfortable performs better, producing a win-win situation for both employer and employee. Clothing plays a crucial role in this. Sioen ensures that the customer always gets the right article of clothing: one that is fit for purpose.’
Frank Poels is the operational manager for the Dommelstroom department and duty officer within the Brabant-Zuidoost safety region. He led the project to replace the firefighting clothing, helmets and gloves.
‘Our mission is: “Care for safety”. You can interpret our mission as an order, because people play an important role in the care for their own safety. Yet it also perfectly describes our core activities. We are not there only to ensure the safety of citizens and companies in our region, but also that of our own people. This is reflected in part in our new firefighting suits. The project includes the remit that the clothing be comfortable, durable and, above all, safe. We also made these same quality demands during the tendering process. Points could be scored for tensile strength, wear resistance, protection against heat, breathability and weight, and other factors. The combination of these quality aspects and price was the basis for our choice of TenCate Millenia™.’
