Sand-coloured TenCate Geotube® containers were used to protect the beachfront property of  the Sri Kijang Bank Negara resort in Malaysia.

Sri Kijang Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is a aresort located at Pantai Cenang facing the Andaman Sea on the west coast of Langkawi. This archipelago lies some 30 kilometres off the mainland coast of Malaysia. Pantai Cenang offers a gorgeous mix of white sand, crystalline, turquoise-blue waters and verdant palm trees.

However, the shoreline of the Sri Kijang Bank Negara Resort has been gradually retreating over the years and the beachfront has narrowed as a result. Erosion during storm surges has intensified and some of the verdant palms have toppled during such storms. Many others are in danger of suffering the same fate.

The containers are each 25 metres long, with a circumference of 10.8 metres, and are hydraulically filled with sand

In 2003 the resort management decided to implement remedial works to mitigate the shoreline  erosion that is beginning to impact severely on the valuable beachfront property. The resort management wanted a solution that would blend in well with the sandy beach environment.

The result is a robust system that is not only stable against high waves and storm surges but can also withstand weathering and sunlight exposure over the long term.
