Montauk, Long Island (USA)

Materials from TenCate Geosynthetics, and in particular the TenCate Geobag®, have been used in the Downtown Montauk Stabilization Project on Long Island (New York, US). The aim was to strengthen and sustainably protect the vulnerable shoreline against hurricanes and storms.  

The project is a part of the Fire Island Inlet to Montauk Point Reformulation Study looking at long-term coastal storm risk management alternatives along the south shore of Suffolk County, Long Island. The devastation brought on by Super Storm Sandy in 2012 accelerated the implementation of the mitigation efforts outlined in this Study.

Montauk is the easternmost hamlet in the Town of East Hampton on Long Island, the island is in the state of New York off the Atlantic coast. East Hampton has some 170 kilometres of shoreline. On its northern coast are a number of sheltered harbours; the Atlantic coastline has beaches, dunes and berms. This is a vulnerable area, which is regularly subjected to the full force of north-easterly storms and hurricanes, leaving badly eroded beaches and dunes and damaged buildings in their wake. 

In view of its vulnerability and the urgent nature of the situation, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the engineering agency of the US Army, needed to develop an approach to expedite construction of the necessary stabilization measures. This resulted in the Downtown Montauk Stabilization Project, which was developed in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, town officials from East Hampton and TenCate Geosynthetics.

The project includes reinforcing the existing dune and berm system along the Downtown Montauk project area over a distance of more than a kilometre. The dune will be returned to its original height and the beach will be widened. Due to restrictions on the placement of hard structures in the coastal zone (stone, concrete), it was decided to use TenCate Geobag®.

TenCate Geobag® is the brandname of a wide range of bag- or pillow-shaped containers. Just like the TenCate Geotube® and TenCate Geocontainer® they provide high UV- and abrasion resistance and are used in hydraulic engineering structures, such as the protection of coastlines and berms (like dune cores).

At Montauk a total of 14,500 units of TenCate Geobag® was used. After the bags were laid on a sand-coloured geotextile measuring more than 1,000 metres in length, they were covered with a thick layer of sand and plantings.

The town of Montauk and the USACE consider this project using the TenCate Geobag® system a success, also because it was completed within three months. And ultimately what is important is that the engineered dune does its job: maintaining the dune profile, protecting the town from flooding and infrastructure damage and saving lives.
