The American Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier has opted for TenCate Defender™ M – recognition of the excellent characteristics of this TenCate material.
Soldiers in Iraq are exposed to various risks, one being roadside bombs. The widening use of such bombs has led to many burn injuries, representing a dramatic shift in the nature of the injuries sustained by warfighters. Rather than danger from shrapnel or bullets, the field soldier now faces the threat of
intense heat from exploding roadside bombs and fuel pool fires resulting from destroyed vehicles. In 2006, at the request of the American army, the American textile industry developed over two dozen fire-resistant fabrics. TenCate Defense & Tactical introduced TenCate Defender™ M for fire-resistant combat uniforms and, after extensive tests, this material emerged as the best performer.
Incorporating inherently fire-resistant fibres, TenCate Defender™ M is superior to the existing uniforms based on cotton/nylon. These melt and drip when exposed to heat and stick to the skin. TenCate Defender™ M retains the look and feel of the uniform and offers the wearer a greater measure of durability, fire-resistance and breathability. Since the end of 2007, when the army began to issue combat uniforms to its field soldiers, the material has been a trendsetter in protection and safety. Thanks to its fire-resistant characteristics, TenCate Defender™ M is ideal in high-heat environments. It has been engineered to provide a first line of defence against heat and fire, as well as to be self-extinguishing when removed from the ignition source.
People at TenCate Defense & Tactical, part of TenCate Protective Fabrics USA, are proud that TenCate Defender™ M serves so well in this capacity. TenCate is constantly developing new products that are subjected to stringent wearer trials by the American army to increase the protection of soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The aim is to provide soldiers with the best possible protection against possible burn injuries as they venture into harm’s way.
TenCate Defender™ M is the standard fabric for the uniforms of the ground forces of the American army and for the United States Marine Corps, which currently uses this fabric in its Flame Resistant Organizational Gear (FROG) Program. In May this year, TenCate received an additional order worth $13 million for delivery of TenCate Defender™ M fabric for the FROG Program. Furthermore, TenCate Defense & Tactical produces fire-resistant fabrics for combat uniforms for air crews (Army Aircrew Combat Uniforms, A2CU), improved overalls in combat vehicles (Improved Combat Vehicle Coveralls, ICVC), marine jackets and bivouac clothing.
