Imagine it: you’re one of more than 27,000 spectators who are watching a football match played on a floating platform backdropped by the imposing Singapore skyline. That’s been a possibility for quite some time now. Limonta Sport in China carried out this project in Marina Bay, the port of Singapore. The synthetic pitch is made from TenCate Tapeslide™ XT synthetic turf fibres, which are known for their exceptional wear resistance and durability.
The floating platform is the biggest of its kind in the world and measures 120 by 83 metres. Until a short while ago this was the stage for such events as the National Day Parade. Limonta was able to persuade the Singapore government to opt for synthetic turf for this terrain rather than some other synthetic surface covering. The new synthetic turf carpet is 116 m long and 71 m wide. This meets FIFA’s requirements and means the platform is also suitable for matches at international level. The stands are located on the more static quayside, offering a view over the pitch.
