For the 10th World Solar Challenge in Australia (from 25 to 31 October 2009 inclusive) the Solar Team Twente (The Netherlands) will use advanced composite materials from TenCate for the construction of their brand-new solar car. TenCate will also provide fabrics for the team’s clothing and the tents for the solar car and team members. In addition, TenCate will make synthetic turf available for the presentation of the solar cars.
TenCate is supporting the 17-strong student team from the University of Twente and Saxion from Enschede (The Netherlands) by sponsorship in kind, in order to make the brand-new solar car 2009 as light and strong as possible. Most of the technology and materials used in this vehicle are of regional origin (the Dutch technology region Twente), including the space and aerospace composite from TenCate.
TenCate composite contributes to more sustainable transport, whether in the air, in space or on the road. This is a strong, lightweight and energy-saving material and the aviation industry and car racing world are already making considerable use of it. Composite from TenCate will be used in virtually every structural part of the new solar car, including the frame. The Solar Team Twente intends to achieve a considerable reduction in weight compared with the previous solar car, and a lower air resistance of at least 25 percent.
Mobile solar panel
TenCate composite has also been incorporated into the renewed solar panel. Just as in the previous solar car, in the new vehicle it is possible for its solar panel to pivot during the journey. In this way, the solar panel will have the most ideal angle of the sun, namely directly onto the solar cells, that now have even been fitted so as to overlap each other. Thanks to new patented technology the solar cells are able to concentrate sunlight even better, so that they generate the maximum of solar energy.
Winner on technology
The sustainable Twente One solar car from 2007 achieved sixth position in the overall placings and reached speeds as high as 126 kilometres per hour during the 3,010-kilometre-long World Solar Challenge through Australia. Thanks to its pivoting solar panel and patented lens system, the Twente One 2007 was the winner in the field of technology. The Twente solar cars from 2007 and 2005 both incorporated TenCate materials.
