Cleaning Onondaga Lake

TenCate Geosynthetics Americas is supplying TenCate Geotube® containers for a major environmental project at Onondaga Lake in upstate New York. This is the largest dredging project with geotextile containers in North America. Material, support, expertise and reliable delivery were contributory factors in the selection of TenCate.

The dredging of Onondaga Lake began in July 2012.  Parsons Engineering, the company hired to design and manage the dredging operations, selected TenCate Geosynthetics Americas as sole manufacturer of TenCateGeotube® to supply containers for the project. The contaminated waste is to be dewatered and stored in these units.

Onondaga Lake, northeast of Syracuse (New York). The lake has a surface area of 12 km2. Industrial activities are found to the southeast and southwest, where there are motorways. The opposite side borders an area with parks and museums.

In accordance with the design, 1.6 million cubic metres of lake sediment will be hydraulically dredged – an amount of sediment that could fill 625 Olympic-size swimming pools. This sediment will be pumped away through a 6.25 km-long double-walled pipeline to a former industrial site that covers over 20 hectares. Here the waste will be dewatered and stored in TenCate Geotube® units. These are custom-made at the TenCate Geosynthetics plant in Commerce (Georgia, US). Dredging started in July. Delivery of the TenCate Geotube® units began a few weeks earlier. In total, more than a thousand tubes are to be installed and filled, and these will vary in diameter per layer, thusmaking the construction more solid and limiting the intervening cavities to a minimum.

The lake sediment will be dewatered in TenCate Geotube® tubes and the water will be cleaned through both an on-site and a municipal wastewater treatment plant before being pumped back into the lake. 
On completion of the dredging and dewatering operations, the TenCate Geotube® containers filled with dried sediment will be permanently stored in a contained area, which will then be completely covered. The project will last four years.
