TenCate Geosynthetics contributes to Cherry Island

TenCate Geosynthetics has made a major contribution to the Landfill Expansion Project in Wilmington (Delaware, US). For its design TenCate Geosynthetics produced the highest strength polyester geotextile reinforcement ever manufactured for this type of construction in the United States.

Cherry Island in Wilmington (picture) has been used for the disposal of municipal solid waste since 1985. This landfill at the confluence of the Delaware and Christina rivers was formerly a dredge disposal site. The landfill was nearing the waste capacity of the facility and the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) needed to extend its life by 25 years. Horizontal expansion was not an option. There remained nothing else for the DSWA to consider but vertical expansion.

TenCate Mirafi® PET geotextiles are used for ground stabilization

The most cost-effective and environment-friendly option proved to be an earth berm reinforced with TenCate high-strength geosynthetics constructed on a subsurface stabilized with geosynthetics.

Constructing the berm with TenCate Miragrid® (geogrids used in retaining walls, steep slopes, sealing of landfills, foundations, road and railways) and TenCate Miramesh® GR (a small-aperture grid material used as a secondary reinforcement for constructed slopes)

The products from the TenCate Mirafi® product portfolio used for this project were TenCate Mirafi® PET1170, TenCate Miragrid® 20XT and TenCate Miramesh® GR. 

The earth berm that was built for this project is one of the most massive reinforced constructions to be undertaken in the US.

The berm is 25 metres high and has a total length of approximately 2600 metres. The total face area of the berm is approximately 44,000 m2. The use of geosynthetics was necessary to construct such a steep berm and over 1.1 million m2 were required.

This outstanding achievement resulted in TenCate Geosynthetics being one of the 5 finalists for the American Society of Civil Engineers' 2012 OPAL Award for an Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement – quite an achievement in itself.
