TenCate Geolon® in Moscow
It looks like a contemporary version of a step pyramid in Mesopotamia or Central America. In reality, however, it is a wall around an apartment building in Moscow (Russia), which has been reinforced with geosynthetics from TenCate.
Due to the growth in population (Moscow has almost 12 million inhabitants), planners sometimes have to build on areas which were previously not considered suitable for construction. In the case described here, a new apartment building in the Russian capital had to be built at the edge of a ravine with a swampy area beneath.
The solution was to reinforce a slope with 85,000 m2 of TenCate Geolon® PP using wrap-around facing technology over the whole length of the construction. Standard concrete blocks were used as a temporary formwork. Once a sand layer had been compacted, these blocks were used for the next higher layer, and so on. In total, 25 layers of 60 cm in height were built in this way.
In just a few months the contractor built a 15 metre high structure with a 45° slope, using just two or three workers and modest equipment. Moreover, the contractor was able to build a pedestrian area on top of the slope. The use of the TenCate materials represents an innovative and cost-efficient solution.
