The RED engine: light, quick and sustainable

The RED Engine of Solar Team Twente will be one of the entrants in the World Solar Challenge in October this year. TenCate provided the team with high-grade carbon fabric for the interior structure and the exterior of the solar car. 

The World Solar Challenge is a biennial international race for solar cars. It starts off on 6 October in Darwin (Australia) and ends one week and 3,000 kilometres later in Adelaide. In the World Solar Challenge it’s a question of converting solar energy into sustainable power for the vehicle as efficiently as possible.

The interior structure and the exterior of The RED Engine are made of high-grade carbon fabric from TenCate. Thanks partly to this, the red solar car from Twente weighs ‘only’ 139 kilos. Other companies too have contributed high tech materials, know-how and support to this mobility concept.

The Solar Team Twente is composed of 16 RED Engineers: students from the University of Twente and Saxion. The team also took part in this race with earlier versions of the solar car in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011.
