TenCate Mirafi® for construction bridge abutment I-84

For the construction of the abutment for a new overpass bridge on Interstate Highway I-84 near Echo Junction in northern Utah (USA) the Utah Department of Transportation (UDoT) has opted for two sustainable materials: soil and TenCate Mirafi® HP570. The innovative method to replace the overpass bridge helps save construction time and government money.

The state is building a replacement 58-foot wide span bridge. Typically, bridge abutments are constructed using steel piles and large cast-in-place concrete structures that require specialized labor, large equipment and takes longer to build. The mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) system utilizing TenCate Mirafi® geotextile reinforcement allows for rapid construction and significant construction savings. This system also allows for flexibility in the appearance of the abutments by having various colors and textures of segmental retaining wall blocks to select for a nice appearance.  UDoT is the first in the United States to use the reinforced soil technique, thus saving considerable time and money: $ 200,000 on the total construction costs of $ 3,200,000.

‘Concrete is expensive and time-consuming,’ says Tim Rose (deputy director Region 2). As I-84 traffic speeds over the bridge near Echo Junction, construction crews are laying the foundation for the replacement bridge below.

When the bridge abutment is finished, builders will slide the 20m-long bridge deck into place. This is expected to happen sometime in late summer.
