Geosynthetics for high-profile infrastructure Saemangeum

The Saemangeum Development Project includes the reclamation of 401 km2 of land from the sea. This also includes the construction of a 33.9-km-long sea dyke and of inner dykes, the creation of a freshwater reservoir and reclaimed land.

One of the parts of this sizeable project was a 4-kilometre-long polder dyke. For this, TenCate Geotube® was chosen: textile containers produced by TenCate Geosynthetics in Zhuhai, each measuring 62 metres in length, which were filled with sand that had been extracted locally. It meant a saving of €4.6 million ($6.2 million), based on current tender prices. This also led to the construction time being shortened by seven months. The choice of this technology with tubular geotextiles resulted in a saving of more than 230,000 tons of CO2: in other words, a 52% smaller CO2 footprint.
