Testing new developed components can be performed in-house at TenCate Grass using a number of different test methods. Not only the composition and specifications of for example the synthetic turf fibres can be tested, but also its long term weathering performance is analyzed. Furthermore, the performance of the components can be tested by turf construction testing and performance testing of the system.
Polymers in general and polyolefins in case of synthetic turf are vulnerable during exposure to sunlight. Under influence of sunlight photo-degradation can occur and polymer chains start to break down. This ultimately causes cracking, chalking, color changes and loss in physical properties. In order to prevent this process UV stabilizers are added to the compounds.
In order to test and analyze if the used polymers are sufficient stabilized the lab of TenCate Grass is equipped with a Weather-O-Meter (WOM). This machine simulates accelerated outdoor exposure and, fitted with a Xenon light source, provides very realistic data. The WOM exposes the synthetic turf fibres to artificial sunlight and rain in cycles. Every 1000 cycles the tensile strength of the synthetic turf fibres is measured, and the possible reduction in tensile strength is calculated.
