Tigerturf UK Case Study: Colchester UTD FC U's turn to new 3G for community football

Colchester United Football in the Community has enhanced its offering with the installation of a brand new 3G pitch at its Shrub End sports ground.

As a football club with deep rooted foundations within the local area, Colchester United Football in the Community plays an invaluable role in enhancing the sporting and wellbeing benefits on offer to young and old alike. With this however, comes a need to make facilities available which can be used for a range of activities all year round.

When the full-sized 3G pitch at Shrub End, which was first built in 2006, failed to meet the requirements of the latest FIFA rating after nine years of service, the club decided to invest in a new pitch to safeguard the long-term future of its community scheme.

FIFA Quality
Through a close working partnership with Colchester Borough Council, the football club replaced its artificial pitch with a FIFA-approved Soccer Real 60 XQ surface, supplied by leading artificial turf manufacturer, TigerTurf UK. Developed for all levels of ability, the high performance surface meets the stringent requirements of the FIFA QUALITY mark, making it suitable for competitive fixtures at community and amateur levels.

As a result of the new 3G pitch being installed by premier sports contractors, McArdle Sport Tec, Colchester United Football in the Community is hoping to build on the 2,000 players who already use the facility each week. As well as being used by the club’s academy, which has achieved Category Two status under the FA’s Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP), its community programme will see the pitch used for a range of wider sporting activities ranging from American football for schools to walking football for seniors. The surface will also continue to be used by the club’s first team when adverse weather makes its Florence Park training ground unplayable.

Tom Tayler, Community Development Officer at Colchester United Football Club, comments: “Like a number of Football League clubs, we aim to play a really important role in the local community, and key to that is our ability to offer pitches which are of a high standard. Our new all-weather pitch’s capacity to host both competitive fixtures and casual play in the community means we can really maximise its usage and get as many people playing sport as possible.

“The quality of the surface is magnificent and it is certainly a facility we’ll be very proud to manage here at Colchester United Football in the Community.”

Paul Langford, managing director at TigerTurf UK, said: “The commitment to grassroots football at Colchester really is exemplary, and we were delighted to play our part in enhancing a facility which is relied upon by so many local players, young and old. The FA’s investment in the continual improvement of the sport at grassroots level should give more clubs around the country the incentive to follow Colchester’s lead.”
