India's captain, Sardar Singh, praises the TenCate synthetic turf
With storm clouds gathering above the Kyocera Stadium, the Indian men's hockey squad played an exciting practice match amongst themselves. Coach Terry Walsh and the team members are looking forward to testing themselves against the best in the world. The matches are being played on synthetic turf certified by the FIH (International Hockey Federation) for the official tournament pitches. "The pitch is really super fast and has great grip for the players", captain Sardar Singh said earlier. India is in pool A with Australia, Belgium, England, Spain and Malaysia. The Belgians are the first opponents of Singh's team and they play each other on the opening day of the tournament. The team is without Ramandeep Singh after the 21 year old forward was seriously injured on Sunday in the warm up game against Argentina. The ball hit his eye and damaged the eye socket and cheek bone. Lalit Upadhyay will replace the unfortunate Singh at the tournament. Nikkin Thimmaiah also went off injured during training at the Kyocera Stadium. He has a tear in his hamstring.
