Road through Chott el Hodna (Algeria)

Road through Chott el Hodna (Algeria)

Algeria has seen the completion of a couple of projects that used TenCate geosynthetics. One of these was the construction of a 13-kilometre-long road through Chott el Hodna, a salt lake between Mcif and Ain Khadra. The new road has opened up the salt lake for the inhabitants, who formerly had to make a 75 km detour.
The salt lake has a poor subgrade. During the winter it has a depth of one metre, but in the summer the bottom is completely covered with a layer of salt, due to evaporation. Initially, the idea was to dig a road two metres deep and then fill it with a good quality granular material before building the road.

Thanks to the expertise of TenCate Geosynthetics and the partnership with the planners, a variant came up for consideration: not to dig, thus avoiding a great waste of time and money. For the foundations of the road our colleagues sold 300,000 m² of TenCate Bidim® and 252,000 m² of TenCate Miragrid® GX 55/55. The filling material was a 30-cm-thick layer of rock and sand.
