    Overview:
    The increased in traffic volume on a rural road leading to Doi Suthep Pagoda in Northern Thailand prompted the Department of Transportation to widen the carriageway of a sharp bend to make traveling safer.

    A geogrid reinforced soil system, 300m long with a height ranging from 8-10m and slope of 1H:2V was constructed to facilitate the road widening. To blend with the surrounding greenery, it was specified that the facing facilitate grass system.

    The road between the provincial towns of Khun Tan and Lampoon in Northern Thailand is an important economic link between the two towns. The failure of the embankment at Km11, significantly disrupted traffic and posed a danger to road users.

    Various repair options were considered by the Thailand Department of Highways, before the decision was made to repair the slope using geogrid soil reinforcement materials.

    The famous Kanaka Durga temple is situated on Indrakiladri hill on the banks of the Krishna River at Vijayawada, in India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh. This temple attracts millions of worshippers every year during the festive seasons. The existing road built in 1969 is about 3km long was only 3m wide at few locations and could not cater for the increase in heavy traffic.

    TenCate technical assistance and experience was sough to provide the most economical solution to widen the road. After analysis, it was decided to use segmental retaining wall using Polyfelt® PEC compared to other options such as a bridge or widening by excavation of the hill.

The length of the reinforced soil structure was 160 meters with a variable height of 6m to 18m high. The soil structure was reinforced by high strength composite geotextiles using onsite poor drainage soil.

    As part of strengthening and widening of existing national highways, National Highway Authority of India has constructed two flyovers and a 10km long elevated express highway on National Highway-1 between Delhi and Amritsar with a view to ease acute congestion in the Panipat city. Construction of concrete retaining walls or reinforced soil retaining walls are the most common method of soil retention in embankment construction on highways passing through urban areas due to the restricted land utility space. Approaches of the express highway at the ramp portions has been planned to retain the earth by constructing the reinforced soil retaining walls using polyester geogrids and concrete fascia panels.
