Naviduct Enkhuizen, The Netherlands

Durable Construction of a Cost Effective and Environmentally Friendly Guide Bank with TenCate Geotube® Systems

The Krabbersgat Lock at Enkhuizen is an important bottleneck in the main network of waterways in the Netherlands. To deal with this bottleneck, the department of public works decided to construct a “Naviduct”. This is a combination of an aqueduct and a lock whereby the road traffic is diverted under the aqueduct via a tunnel. The challenge is to find a cost effective, environmentally friendly way to build the Naviduct, the guide dams and the constructions of peninsulas that protect the Naviduct from drifting ice and create a shelter for ships passing through the Naviduct.

TenCate Geotube® systems from TenCate Geosynthetics were selected to construct the core of the guide dams required to create a shelter for vessels to enter from the Markermeer into the Naviduct. To construct the core, 7.500 linear meters of TenCate Geotubes® systems where used.
