In an effort to protect the eroding shoreline and to provide a habitat for wildlife and native vegetation, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) decided to create a new wetlands area within Fox Lake using dredged lake sediment materials.
The DNR designed and built the new 27-acre wetlands structure "in-lake" using Geotube® marine containment technology. [Project rendering is shown in photo 1.] The new island was constructed using 6,000 linear feet of 37.5' circumference Geotube® units for the containment of 2,000 cubic yards of dredged materials.
As the Geotube® containers were placed as a perimeter berm, organic deposits and silt filled inside the perimeter to create the new island. During the filling process, the forts were left open to allow excess dredged materials to flow to the inside of the containment structure [photo 2]. Additional dredge material was pumped inside the Geotube® containment area to create a wildlife habitat [photo 3].
As the dredged materials reached specified grade levels, native vegetation was planted and the area became a refuge for birds and plants [photo 5]. This wetlands island serves as a two-fold permanent solution: offering the recovery of a critical habitat, while serving as a confined disposal facility for dredged lake sediment.
