Amatique Bay, Guatemala

Product:         Geotube® Marine Structures Technology

Application:   Jetties

Location:       Amatique Bay, Guatemala

Installation:   1997

The Challenge:

Shoreline protection was needed to prevent erosion and protect a new beach fronting Amatique Bay along the eastern coast of Guatemala.

The Solution:

Geotube® marine containment technology was used to build a protective jetty.  820 linear feet of Geotube® containers (49' circumference) were installed.  A 10-inch cutter head dredge filled the units [photo 2], and a "Y Valve" was used for pressure relief.  The Geotube® units were pumped to a design height of 8.8 feet [photo 3].

The Results:

Five years after the installation, the Geotube® units were fully integrated into the environment with palm trees and vegetation on the jetty structure [photo 6].
