Bahia Principe Tulum, Mexico

Product:         Geotube® Marine Structures Technology

Application:   Breakwaters

Location:       Bahia Principe Tulum, Mexico

Installation:   2001

The Challenge:

A resort area wanted to protect and increase the width of their beaches by using an artificial reef.

The Solution:

Geotube® marine containment technology was used for the breakwater project.  The Geotube® structures were placed approximately 328 feet offshore at a depth of 6-1/2 feet [photo 1].  Each container was filled by the hand-dredge method [photo 2].  They were highly effective in disapating wave energy [photo 3].  And heavy marine growth gathered on the breakwater structures [photo 4].

The Results:

The project has been successful in this resort area.  Remarkable sand accretion between the Geotube® breakwaters and the shoreline has occurred since installation [photo 5].  And the beach has also increased in width since the installation.  The breakwaters have not interfered with beach and water recreation in the area [photos 6-7].
