Each year during a scheduled plant shutdown, two million gallons of alum sludge from an on-site water treatment plant must be removed and dewatered -- with the entire operation being completed within a few days.
A single GT500 Geotube® container (60' circumference x 200' long) dewatered the entire two million gallons of sludge within the timeframe of the plant shutdown [photos 1-2]. Not only that, the Geotube® installation was fast and easy for the plant's maintenance personnel.
The Geotube® dewatering operation removed 99% of the Total Suspended Solids (TSS) with effluent BOD of less than 7 mg/l. This allowed the resulting effluent to be discharged directly without any additional treatment by the mill [photos 3-4].
This dewatering process proved to be extremely successful. It has since been adopted as the mill's standard method for its annual cleanout.
