I-99 Acid Runoff

Product:         Geotube® Dewatering Technology

Application:   Mining & Mineral Processing

Location:       Skytop Mountain, Pennsylvania

The Challenge:

The need to contain and filter acid runoff from 700,000 cubic yards of pyretic rocks that were unearthed during the I-99 construction.  Many environmental concerns for the local water sources were raised [photo 1].

The Solution:

Geotube® dewatering technology was used to contain and dewater contaminated sediments.  The acid runoff collected into sediment ponds; then it was pumped into a sedimentation tank.  Polymer was mixed into the solution tank, and then mixed into the contaminated slurry before entering the Geotube® unit [photo 3].

The resulting effluent released from the Geotube® unit [photo 5] was very clear.

The Results:

Local streams and groundwater were relieved of iron oxide contaminants.  This eliminated the environmental problem caused during the interstate construction.
