Cage Waste Cleanup / Removal
Product: Geotube® Dewatering Technology
Location: Bay of Fundy, East Coast, North America
An aquaculture cage site located in Passamaquoddy Bay (of the Bay of Fundy region) needed to clean the waste generated by the fish farming operation.
This aquaculture site's cages were equipped with the Lift-Up® mortality retrieval system. This allowed the operator to collect the waste produced by fish feces and unconverted feed. Once a day, a pump was used to extract the collected waste and load it to a tank aside the farming cages [photo 2].
Once the tank in the boat was filled, the boat approached the shore where the waste was pumped to a Geotube® unit. The chemical conditioning and polymer flocculation was achieved within the line between the boat and the Geotube® unit. The waste was pumped at 1.5% solids [photo 3].
Approximately 5,000 gallons of fish feces and unconverted food were collected and processed using Geotube® dewatering technology. The results were excellent in terms of water quality and nutrients removal:
- Removed 95% of solids.
- Removed nutrients (more than 90% phosphorous and more than 70% nitrogen).
- Produced a clean, clear effluent water -- ready to be returned back to the ocean environment [photo 4].
