New lakes in Czech Republic with TenCate geosynthetics

The extraction of brown coal in the northwest of the Czech Republic has left deep scars in the landscape – reason for the government to launch a large-scale environmental programme for the whole region in 2003. Part of this is the realization of seven lakes. The designers and the government have opted for materials and technical support from TenCate Geosynthetics for the installation of access roads, wave breakers, embankments and erosion control. Geosynthetics from TenCate take care of the drainage and permanent reinforcement of soil constructions, and are eminently suitable for civil engineering applications. They facilitate a solution that is both cost-effective and environment-friendly.

The realization of Lake Medard at Sokolov is presently in progress. The lake is 4 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide, with a maximum depth of 50 metres.

A total of 347,630 m² of geosynthetics from TenCate are being used for this lake: three types of TenCate Polyfelt® and TenCate Miragrid®.

The water for this lake flows from the Ohře River, and by the middle of 2012 the lake will boast its intended shape and volume (119,850,768 m³) – nearly 28,000 Olympic swimming pools all told.
